AI tools for Canadian small businesses, rechecked for 2026

Updated 24 September 2026. We rechecked every tool in our May 2025 list against the vendors’ own pages. One no longer exists, one is built for enterprises, and the verdicts below replace the original article.

A year-old list of AI tools is a liability, and small Canadian firms are buying from lists like that every week.

Most of the best AI tools for Canadian small businesses in 2026 are the ones already inside software you pay for. When we rechecked the ten tools this page recommended in May 2025, MonkeyLearn no longer existed as a product. Its domain now redirects to Medallia. Ada is built for enterprises, with no public pricing or self-serve plan. Copilot in Power BI needs paid Fabric capacity, which a Pro licence alone does not cover. The rest still work, and several put their AI features in plans small firms can afford.

TL;DR

  • Of ten AI tools we recommended in 2025, one is gone, one is built for enterprises and one hides its AI behind a capacity licence.
  • Chatbots are the third most common AI use among Canadian businesses that use AI, at 28.2% (Statistics Canada, June 2026).
  • Check which plan the AI feature is actually on. It is often one tier above the price on the ad.
  • BDC’s new LIFT financing requires at least $1 million in annual revenue, so most micro-businesses are self-funding.

Which AI tools should a Canadian small business use in 2026?

Use AI features inside tools you already run for customer messages, email marketing and sales follow-up before you buy anything standalone. Tidio, ManyChat, Constant Contact, MailerLite, HubSpot, Zoho CRM and Freshsales all still sell AI features to small firms. Most list prices in US dollars, and the AI often sits one tier above the entry plan.

Tool Use Where the AI sits, September 2026 Our verdict
Tidio Website chat Free plan includes 50 one-time Lyro AI conversations, then Lyro is paid (Tidio pricing) Use, if most questions repeat
ManyChat Instagram and Facebook messages Manychat AI starts on the Pro plan at US$29 a month, not on Free or Essential (ManyChat pricing) Use, for social-first shops
Ada Customer service agents No public pricing or self-serve plan; built for enterprises (Ada) Not for small firms
Constant Contact Email marketing AI copy generator on all plans from US$12 a month; campaign builder from Standard (Constant Contact pricing) Use
MailerLite Email marketing AI writing assistant on paid plans from Comfort; a free plan is available without it (MailerLite pricing) Use, once you outgrow free
MonkeyLearn Text analysis Gone; the domain redirects to Medallia Remove from your list
Power BI Dashboards Copilot needs Fabric F2 or Premium P1 capacity; a Pro licence alone is not enough (Microsoft Learn) Skip the AI, keep the dashboards
HubSpot CRM Breeze Agent Hub included from Starter; many AI features and agents run on HubSpot credits (HubSpot) Use, watch credit use
Zoho CRM CRM Zia features on paid tiers, fuller assistant on Enterprise (Zoho pricing) Use with care, check the tier
Freshsales CRM Growth from US$9 per user a month; Freddy AI Agent costs US$49 per 100 sessions (Freshworks pricing) Use, if you can predict volume

Why it matters in Canada

Canadian small firms buy AI mostly through tools like these, not through custom projects. Statistics Canada found 19.9% of businesses with one to four employees used AI in the year to the second quarter of 2026, against 27.8% of firms with 100 or more staff. Among AI users, chatbots ranked third at 28.2%, behind data analytics and text analytics.

Surveys also disagree on how many firms use AI at all, and the gap is instructive. CFIB found nearly 45% of small firms use generative AI in their operations (April 2026). Statistics Canada counts only AI used to produce goods or deliver services, which is why its figure is 19.2%. Both are right, and many Canadian businesses still have no AI plans at all. Plenty of owners draft emails with ChatGPT and would never call that “using AI in production”.

What does the money situation look like?

Most micro-businesses pay for these tools themselves. The federal Canada Digital Adoption Program’s main grant stream stopped taking new applications on 19 February 2024. BDC now points owners to LIFT, a $500 million financing program launched on 24 April 2026.

LIFT is a loan, not a grant, and it has a floor. The LIFT program page sets a minimum of $1 million in annual revenue for the AI and digital track and requires a BDC-approved technology plan. A four-person bookkeeping firm under $1 million in revenue is on its own. That is fine, because a $29-a-month plan does not need financing.

What leaders should do next

  1. List every tool you already pay for, then check which ones include AI on your current plan.
  2. Delete MonkeyLearn and any other dead product from your internal tool lists and vendor sheets.
  3. Before upgrading a tier for AI, run the free or trial version on one real task for two weeks.
  4. For usage-billed AI such as HubSpot credits or Freddy sessions, set a monthly cap in the admin settings.
  5. Ask each vendor where your customer data is stored and whether it trains models on it.

The skeptic’s view

A fair objection is that no list stays current. Vendors rename features and move them between tiers every quarter, so any article like this starts going stale the day it runs. That is true, and it is the reason to check the plan page yourself before you buy. The underlying advice holds up better than any single price: use what is inside your existing software first.

What to watch

  • Statistics Canada’s next business conditions release, for whether small-firm AI use moves past 20%.
  • BDC’s first LIFT uptake numbers, which will show who actually qualifies.
  • Vendor price changes as usage-based AI billing spreads to more CRM and chat tools this fall.

FAQ

What is the best free AI tool for a small business in Canada?

Tidio’s free plan includes 50 Lyro AI conversations. Microsoft Copilot Chat is free for eligible Microsoft 365 business users signed in with a work account.

Does MonkeyLearn still exist?

Not as a standalone product. It was folded into Medallia, and monkeylearn.com now redirects to Medallia’s site.

Is there government funding for AI tools for Canadian small businesses?

The CDAP grant stream closed to new applicants in February 2024. BDC’s LIFT offers loans of $25,000 to $5 million, but only to firms with at least $1 million in annual revenue.

How many Canadian small businesses use AI?

Statistics Canada reported 19.9% of businesses with one to four employees used AI in the year to Q2 2026. CFIB’s broader measure of generative AI use is nearly 45%.

Closing analysis

A tool list is only as good as the date on it. The dependable move for a small business in 2026 is dull: switch on the AI you already pay for, cap the usage billing and delete the dead products. Monday action: open the billing page of your CRM and email tool and find out which plan tier your AI feature sits on. Our directory of AI tools for Canadian businesses is where we keep the current verdicts, and our guide to measuring the time AI actually saves shows how to test them.
