Claude for Google Workspace puts an assistant inside your shared files, and we think that’s a workplace change, not a plugin. Spend an hour on Monday deciding the mode, the files and the person who flips the switch, and keep the ask-first setting on for the first month.
The short version
- Claude for Google Workspace is in public beta on all paid Claude plans, as a sidebar in Docs, Sheets and Slides. Anthropic’s help page says it asks before edits by default.
- Its access follows your existing Google sharing permissions, so a sloppy sharing setup becomes the assistant’s reach too.
- On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner has to enable the Google connectors first. Make that a decision with a name next to it.
Anthropic says Claude for Google Workspace is now in public beta on all paid plans. You install it from the Google Workspace Marketplace, open a file, and find it under Extensions. In Docs it can suggest rewrites and fix sentences. In Sheets it writes formulas, builds pivot tables and charts, and adds tabs. In Slides it builds new slides from your deck’s own layouts and themes.
What can Claude actually do in your files?
It can read the open document, spreadsheet or deck, see what you’ve selected, and change it in place. Edits arrive as approval cards you accept or reject. If you’re signed in with a Claude account, the sidebar uses the same models, connectors and skills you have in Claude itself. A separate set of Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors lets you start from a Claude chat and have it create or edit Google files from there.
Pricing, per one Canadian outlet’s report on the launch, starts at the $20 USD Pro plan. Trade reports also mention a second mode that accepts all edits automatically. That isn’t on Anthropic’s page, so check whether your version has it.
What should you decide before anyone installs it?
Three things, in this order.
- Mode. Keep “Ask before edits” on. Every change goes past a human, which is the same rule we’d give for any new assistant. If a faster mode exists in your version, hold it back until people trust the output.
- Files. Claude’s access matches Google’s sharing permissions, so it can reach whatever the person using it can reach. That sounds safe, but it means a loose sharing setup is now the assistant’s reach as well. Ten minutes checking who can open the finance folder is time well spent.
- Switch. On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner must turn the connectors on. Don’t let it be an accident of whoever logs in first.
If you’re also weighing Google’s own assistant, our Workspace Gemini edition check covers which plan gets what. And when you start letting any assistant act on files without asking, an incident plan is what you’ll want written down already.
Who benefits first?
Our read is that spreadsheets are where a small firm sees value soonest. A sidebar that writes the formula and builds the pivot table saves the afternoon that the one person who knows Sheets always loses. Slides is the one to watch for quality. Anthropic says it checks for overlapping elements and text running off the slide, which is a fair admission of where decks go wrong.
Where this could be wrong
We’re leaning on Anthropic’s own help article and trade reports of the launch, and a beta changes weekly. Nothing public tells you how often its formulas are wrong, and Anthropic hasn’t published error rates. If early users report that Sheets formulas need heavy correction, our enthusiasm for the spreadsheet use case drops. Treat the first month as a test on files you can afford to get wrong.
The sceptic’s best case
The sceptic says nobody needed another sidebar, and that staff will paste into a chatbot anyway. That’s fair, and it’s the reason to roll this out deliberately. A sidebar inside the file is easier to govern than ten people pasting company data into ten browser tabs.
We’d concede the point if your team’s usage showed the sidebar changes nothing about where data travels. Until you’ve looked, the in-file option is the better bet.
What to watch
- Whether Anthropic publishes admin controls beyond the connector switch.
- Whether the beta label comes off before year end.
- User reports on formula accuracy in Sheets.
