Wealthsimple Penny asks before it pays. Your card limit sets the damage

Wealthsimple Penny confirms every payment. A capped virtual card decides what an agent’s mistake can cost.

Wealthsimple Penny will ask before it moves a dollar, and that prompt is the feature Wealthsimple put in its headline at Thursday’s Toronto launch. For a small business, the more useful number sits lower in the same announcement: a temporary virtual card with its own spending limit and expiry. That limit, set by you, decides the most an AI agent can cost you. The prompt does not.

The November 5, 2026 release says Penny will send e-Transfers and wires, manage expenses and pay invoices, and that it never completes an action without client confirmation. The same release lists temporary virtual cards for all of its prepaid and credit card holders, up to five at a time, each with a custom limit and expiry, pitched for “safer agentic payments.” Those cards arrive at the end of 2026. The release gives no public date for Penny itself.

Key points

Wealthsimple Penny confirms every payment first. A tired owner can approve the wrong invoice.
Temporary cards, five at a time with their own caps, are what limit the loss.
On our illustrative numbers, five capped cards cut a print shop’s exposure from $20,000 to $3,600, or 82%.
Canada’s screen-scraping ban is law but not yet in force.

What does Wealthsimple Penny let an agent pay?

Wealthsimple Penny is planned to handle e-Transfers, wires, bill and invoice payments and trades inside a client’s Wealthsimple accounts, with a confirmation from the client before each one. Clients will also be able to link ChatGPT or Claude in early 2027 and pick the access level. The agent drafts; a person approves.

It is a sensible design that moves the risk to a single tap. Say an owner approves 40 supplier payments a month and checks each one on a phone between jobs. Prompts are weakest against the payment that looks right: a duplicate invoice, or an amount with an extra zero.

One more detail matters. Wealthsimple promises to repay unauthorized Wealthsimple Pay transactions for clients who sign in with passkeys. A payment you confirmed yourself is hard to call unauthorized. The release does not say how an approved but wrong agent payment is handled, so a business should assume that one is on its own books.

How much can a capped card save if an agent gets it wrong?

On our illustrative numbers, a lot. A small firm that lets an AI assistant pay five regular vendors from one card exposes that card’s whole limit. Give each vendor its own temporary card capped at the expected charge, and the worst single mistake drops to the largest cap. Across all five, exposure falls by about 82%.

Labelled illustration: an 11-person print shop in Lethbridge with a $20,000 business card limit, where five charges run each month: paper supplier $1,450, design software $380, ad spend $260, courier $900, press parts $610.

Exposure if an agent pays from the wrong card (illustrative)
One shared card: up to $20,000 at risk, the full limit.
Five capped cards: up to $3,600 at risk ($1,450 + $380 + $260 + $900 + $610).
Worst single error: $1,450, the paper supplier’s cap.
Caps set 20% above each bill for price changes: $4,320, still 78% below the shared card.
All figures are an illustration for a hypothetical firm. The five-card limit, custom caps and expiry come from Wealthsimple’s November 5, 2026 release.

The $3,600 depends on caps the owner sets. The agent never decides it. The card refuses an over-cap charge whatever the approval said. With 30 suppliers, a firm must choose which five get the agent. We would pick the recurring, predictable ones and keep one-off payments on a person’s own card.

Does the approval prompt already make this safe enough?

For a solo owner with three bills a month, probably yes. Confirming each payment is a real check, and temporary cards add admin: five sets of card details to rotate, expiry dates to track, and a declined charge when a supplier raises prices without warning.

We would still set the caps. Setup happens once per vendor; the exposure repeats every month the agent runs.

Which route into your money is safer today?

A link the platform builds and controls beats handing an AI tool your banking password, and the law has not caught up. The Consumer-Driven Banking Act, section 171, bans third parties from using a customer’s login to get at their data, but that section is not in force yet, so the ban does not apply today.

The draft regulations published June 27, 2026 put about nine million Canadians on data-sharing services that work this way. Wealthsimple says Penny runs inside its own platform, and the 2027 ChatGPT and Claude links will need approval at setup plus an extra check on critical actions. Compare that with a bank that has locked outside AI agents out of client accounts, and with the login terms in your bank agreement that already make shared passwords your problem.

Our ranking of payment fraud controls by cost applies to agent payments too, as does the refund lesson from Google AI Mode checkout in Canada. More builders sit on our Canadian AI companies hub.

FAQ

Is Wealthsimple Penny available now?

Wealthsimple announced Penny on November 5, 2026 without a public launch date. Its temporary virtual cards are listed for the end of 2026, and the ChatGPT and Claude account links for early 2027.

Can Wealthsimple Penny pay invoices without my approval?

No. Wealthsimple’s release says every payment, trade or other action from Penny waits until the client confirms it.

How many temporary virtual cards can a Wealthsimple client hold?

Up to five at a time, according to Wealthsimple. Each has its own card details, and the client sets a custom spending limit and expiry for each one.

Is screen scraping banned in Canada?

Section 171 of the Consumer-Driven Banking Act prohibits it, but that section is not in force yet, so the ban does not apply today.

If Wealthsimple Penny lands on your phone next year, set the card caps before the agent pays its first invoice. Approval taps get faster with practice. Caps stay exactly where you put them.

Facts checked November 5, 2026 against Wealthsimple’s release, the Consumer-Driven Banking Act and the Canada Gazette. We have not used Penny or the temporary cards; neither was available to the public on that date.
