Google AI Mode checkout in Canada leaves refunds with the retailer

Google AI Mode checkout Canada keeps you as seller of record. Test one Google Pay refund before you join.

Google opened AI Mode checkout for Canadian shoppers. The retailer still owns the refund.

Key points

  • Google’s November 4 Canada post puts Universal Commerce Protocol checkout on Search’s AI Mode and on Gemini. The first partner names are lululemon, Shoppers Drug Mart, Simons and Shopify merchants Google calls select.
  • Retailers remain the seller of record, and shoppers pay with Google Pay from Google Wallet.
  • Simplified UCP integration in Merchant Center starts next year, so most stores are not in the first wave.
  • Our view: wait unless your returns desk can already refund a Google Pay order on one SKU this week.

Google’s Canada announcement leads with agentic shopping, a holiday AI figure and a short partner list. What it skips is more useful to a buyer: fees, which Shopify stores count as “select,” and who answers when an AI Mode order comes back. Google’s November 4 post says retailers remain the seller of record. That one line decides the work.

What went live in Canada on November 4

Direct checkout that uses the Universal Commerce Protocol is going live for shoppers in Canada on AI Mode (Search) and on Gemini. The post names lululemon, Shoppers Drug Mart, Simons and select Shopify merchants as eligible. Payment is through Google Pay, drawing on details already stored in Google Wallet. Google says it will add capabilities such as loyalty rewards in the coming months.

The same post says simplified UCP integration will open in Merchant Center starting next year. Until then, broad self-serve access is not what this launch is. UCP’s own site puts businesses at the centre and says they remain the Merchant of Record. That matches Google’s seller-of-record wording, and Google’s Merchant Center help page says the checkout is open only to select merchants for now. It does not publish a Canadian fee sheet.

What the launch copy leaves out

Google highlights cart abandonment and cites its own research that 59% of Canadian holiday shoppers intend to use an AI tool this season. Treat that share as a vendor claim. The post does not say what Google charges, how “select Shopify merchants” are chosen, or how a refund lands when the buyer never opened your site. For a mid-size apparel or pharmacy chain, that gap matters more than the protocol name.

Canadian retailers already face agentic commerce prep work on feeds, policies and who the shopper is. Shopify merchants have a separate question about which AI shopping agents to enable. Google’s Canada checkout is a third surface: discovery and pay happen on Google, while you stay the seller.

A one-SKU test before you ask to join

We did not place an AI Mode order. We read the public pages. The honest limit is that nobody outside Google and the named partners has published Canadian order volumes or return rates for this path. So the useful check is operational.

Pick one SKU you already sell with a clear refund rule. Write a short script your returns desk would use if the customer says the order came through Google Search or Gemini and paid with Google Pay. Name the person who issues the refund, the system where the order will appear, and the proof you need (order id, email, last four of the card). Run that script in a tabletop drill this week. Pass mark: the desk finishes the path in under ten minutes without calling IT. If you cannot name those three things, wait for Merchant Center rather than chase a partner slot.

Product data still matters on any agent surface. Stores that leave material, size and GTIN thin will struggle whether the buyer is human or an agent, as our product markup check of Canadian brand stores showed.

Should a store wait for Merchant Center?

Yes, for most Canadian retailers. The first wave is a named partner list plus select Shopify merchants. Waiting is the default when your refund path is untested. Join early only if you already fulfil Google-originated demand and your desk can prove the Google Pay refund path on one SKU. Google’s own timeline points most catalogues to next year’s Merchant Center tools.

Evidence that would settle it: Google publishing Canadian AI Mode order and return rates, or Merchant Center shipping a refund path stores already run. Until then, treat seller-of-record as an operations test.
