Woman working at a laptop with documents in a bright office, where Gemini in Chrome could read the open tab

Gemini in Chrome reads whatever tab is open. Decide which tabs that should be

Gemini in Chrome shares the open tab by default. Set the admin defaults before staff find the button.

Gemini in Chrome reads the page in your current tab by default and can take up to 10 more. On a work laptop that might be a ChatGPT thread, a client file or a payroll screen, so Gemini in Chrome needs a written default before staff find the button themselves.

  • Google says Gemini in Chrome uses the current tab’s content by default, and users can share up to 10 open tabs.
  • Admins control it through the Gemini app setting and Chrome’s GeminiSettings policy. Both must be on for it to work.
  • Staff without a qualifying Workspace edition use it under consumer terms, which changes how their data is handled.

Open Chrome on a work laptop this week and you may find an Ask Gemini button in the top corner. Click it, and according to Google’s help page, “the page content from your current tab is shared by default.” That tab could be anything: a ChatGPT conversation, a supplier contract in a web portal, the accounting screen. The person who clicked may not have thought about which tab was open.

We think the default-shared tab is the one setting a Canadian team should decide on before anything else about Gemini in Chrome.

What does Gemini in Chrome actually see?

By Google’s description, it sees the page content of the current tab, any of up to 10 other open tabs the user adds, and tabs opened from a shared tab. When a shared tab is a Workspace page such as a Google Doc, Gemini “may directly access your Workspace account” to answer about the whole document.

Users can remove a tab from sharing and can turn off “Share current tab by default” in Chrome settings.

So the assistant can pull together material from different tools in one answer, which is exactly why people like it. It also means content from one vendor’s product can be passed to another vendor’s assistant with a single click. A ChatGPT thread read by Gemini is now in two companies’ systems.

Which terms apply to your staff?

It depends on their Google account. Google’s Chrome Enterprise help page says that for qualifying Workspace editions, prompts and tab context are not used to train generative models and stay within the organization. For users without a qualifying edition, an admin who allows the feature must grant access to Gemini “under consumer terms.”

Staff signed into Chrome with a personal Gmail account on a work laptop fall outside your Workspace terms entirely. Google is turning prompts into buttons too, and Chrome Skills need someone to own them.

The edition question is the same one we covered in our Gemini plan check: what you pay for decides which data promises you get.

Who owns the switch?

Your Google Workspace administrator does. Google says Gemini in Chrome is configured through the Gemini app setting and the GeminiSettings Chrome policy, and that access “requires both to be enabled.” The settings are applied by organizational unit or group in the Admin console, under Devices, Chrome, Settings, so you can allow it for one team and not another.

Team Typical open tabs Our suggested setting
Marketing, sales Public sites, drafts, CRM Allow; turn off current-tab sharing by default
Finance, HR, payroll Banking, payroll, employee records Do not allow until reviewed
Staff on unmanaged browsers or personal accounts Anything Cover in your personal AI agent rule

These are our suggested defaults; adjust for your own clients and contracts. The last row uses the one-page rule from our personal AI agent policy column. Phones raise the same question through the operating system; see our note on Siri AI French support for the iPhone version.

What would change our view

If Google switched the current-tab default to off for managed Workspace accounts, or let admins block specific sites from being shared with Gemini, the team-by-team approach would be more than most small firms need. We have not seen either option on Google’s pages as of September 26, 2026.

Try This Week

  1. Task: decide the Gemini in Chrome setting for each team.
  2. Owner: your Google Workspace administrator.
  3. Metric: organizational units with an explicit Gemini in Chrome setting.
  4. Baseline: open Devices, Chrome, Settings today and note what is set. Unset means users may get the default.
  5. Threshold: every unit has a deliberate setting, and finance and HR are covered.
  6. Deadline: Friday, October 2.

FAQ

Does Gemini in Chrome read my open tabs?

Google says it uses the current tab’s page content by default and that users can share up to 10 other open tabs. Users can remove a tab or turn off current-tab sharing in Chrome settings.

Can an admin turn off Gemini in Chrome?

Yes. Google says it needs both the Gemini app setting and the GeminiSettings Chrome policy enabled, and admins set both in the Admin console by organizational unit or group.

Is Gemini in Chrome data used for training?

For qualifying Google Workspace editions, Google says prompts and tab context are not used to train generative AI models. Users without a qualifying edition use it under consumer terms.
