Vendors are selling generative engine optimization as the next marketing line item. The best published numbers say AI assistants send a small share of visits, and Google says there is no special trick to get cited.
- In the largest studies, AI assistants send about 0.12% to 1.08% of site visits.
- Google says ranking in its AI features is ordinary search work, with no special files or markup.
- Check your own numbers free in Google Analytics before paying anyone to optimize for them.
AI search visibility has become a sales pitch, and small businesses are the audience. The pitch says customers now ask ChatGPT and Gemini instead of Google, so you need a new kind of optimization and someone to charge for it. The evidence is thinner than the pitch. Spend on the basics first, and measure your own traffic before you spend on anything else.
TL;DR
- Verified fact: Google’s AI optimization guide says optimizing for AI search is still SEO, with no special files or markup needed.
- Attributed claim: Conductor, which sells GEO software, finds AI referrals at 1.08% of traffic across 13,770 domains. Ahrefs finds 0.12% of visits across 3,000 sites.
- Attributed claim: Ahrefs finds that only 12% of the links ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot cite also rank in Google’s top 10, so ordinary rank is not the whole story outside Google.
- Analysis: keep your Google Business Profile and key directories current, publish pages with original detail and skip paid GEO tools for now.
- Action: pull 90 days of AI referral traffic from your analytics and decide from that.
What does Google say about getting cited in AI answers?
Google says that optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO. Its guide recommends sound basics, original content that is not a commodity, and checking the Generative AI report in Search Console. Google’s separate page on AI features says no additional requirements apply to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimizations are necessary. A page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet.
That is Google describing Google. It says nothing about ChatGPT, Perplexity or Claude, which is where the evidence gets mixed.
How much traffic do AI assistants actually send?
Not much, in the largest studies available. Ahrefs looked at 3,000 sites and found AI sending 0.12% of views and 0.17% of visitors, and noted that some assistants strip referral data, so the true figure is probably a little higher. Conductor, in a 2026 benchmark built on late-2025 data from 13,770 domains, found 1.08% of sessions came from AI, with ChatGPT supplying 87.4% of that. Conductor sells GEO software, so read its figure as the high end.
Pew Research measured the other side. Across 68,879 searches by 900 US adults in March 2025, people clicked a result link in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared and 15% when it did not. Pew counted a click on a link inside the summary in 1% of visits. That is a US study and not a business one. It shows that AI summaries can reduce clicks, which is a different problem from earning citations. We covered an earlier angle on that in our look at zero-click search.
Where does the sales pitch run ahead of the evidence?
Three claims in the usual pitch do not hold up. First, that special markup or an llms.txt file is required. Google says it is not, and no independent evidence was found that it helps elsewhere. Second, that you can track your rank in AI answers. SparkToro and Gumshoe ran 2,961 prompts, many times each, and found less than a 1% chance of the same list of brands appearing twice, which makes rank tracking a poor guide. Gumshoe sells a tracking tool. Third, that AI visitors convert far better, which rests on a few vendor and secondary figures defined differently from one another.
Ahrefs also found that roughly 80% of AI citations came from pages that did not rank for that query in Google. That cuts against a pure SEO answer. The honest reading is that Google’s advice is right for Google and the other assistants behave differently in ways nobody has reliably mapped.
Try This Week
- In Google Analytics, filter 90 days of referral traffic to chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. Note the share of sessions and, if you track them, leads.
- Open your Google Business Profile and check hours, services, photos and phone number. BrightLocal, which sells local SEO tools, found that Google Business Profile accounted for 28.6% of the sources cited across AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT in its study.
- Pick your five best-selling services and make sure each has one page with original detail, such as your pricing logic, your process and your service area.
- Fix the plain things, including indexability, page speed and broken links. Our piece on data readiness is a related read on the groundwork inside a company.
- Set a rule. If AI sends under 2% of sessions and under 2% of leads, do not buy a retainer.
What does the sceptic say?
The best counter-argument is that the numbers are tiny today and growing, and a business that waits will be late. AI referrals are a small share of a rising line, and early work can compound. That case has force for businesses that sell what people ask assistants to recommend.
The reply is that the early work and the basic work are the same work. Original pages, accurate listings and fast sites help in every channel. A retainer for something specifically called GEO has no published evidence of return behind it. If your analytics later show AI sending a real share of your leads, the evidence will be yours, and the budget decision becomes easy.
What to watch
- Your own AI referral share, checked monthly in analytics.
- Any Canadian or small-business-only referral study from a named first-party source. None was found.
- Changes to Google’s AI features guidance, which was last revised in July 2026.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a special GEO tool to appear in AI answers?
Google says no special optimization is needed for its AI features and that this is ordinary SEO. For ChatGPT and others, no independent evidence shows paid tools raise citations. Check your analytics first, then decide.
How much traffic do AI assistants send to business websites?
About 0.12% of views in an Ahrefs study of 3,000 sites and 1.08% of sessions in a Conductor benchmark of 13,770 domains. Conductor sells GEO software, so treat its figure as the high end.
What should a small business fix first for AI search?
Keep your Google Business Profile accurate, make sure key pages are indexable and fast, and publish pages with original detail about your services. These help in normal search and in AI answers.
The decision in one line
